How this works

Your public IP is read from the connection your browser makes to our server and to Cloudflare. We don't need permissions, apps or cookies to see it — every website you visit sees the same address.

To check IPv4 and IPv6 separately, your browser also contacts an IPv4-only and an IPv6-only endpoint. The internet provider and ASN come from the network registry for your IP address, and the location is IP-based geolocation, which usually points to your ISP's regional hub rather than your home.

Public IP vs the IP on your device

Your phone or laptop also has a private address such as 192.168.1.23, given out by your router. Every device in your home shares the router's single public IPv4 address through network address translation (NAT). With IPv6, devices often have their own public addresses, protected by the router's firewall.

Mobile networks usually go one step further and share one public IPv4 address between many customers (carrier-grade NAT). That's why the address shown here can differ from the WAN address in your router. See public vs private IP for details.

Reading the results

  • IPv6 shows “No IPv6 connectivity” — your ISP or router hasn't enabled IPv6. Everything still works over IPv4. Test again with the IPv6 test.
  • ISP shows a company you don't recognise — the registry lists the network operator, which can be your provider's parent or wholesale partner, or your VPN.
  • Location is another city — normal. IP geolocation reflects where the ISP registers or routes the address block.

Common problems

  • My IP changes every day. Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic IP. ISPs can offer a static IP, usually for a fee.
  • A website says my IP is blocked. Shared (CGNAT) addresses sometimes inherit other users' reputation. Restarting a mobile connection often gives a new address.
  • Nothing is detected. A content blocker or strict network filter may block the lookup requests.

Questions

Can someone find my home address from my IP?

No. An IP address reveals your ISP and an approximate region at most. Only your ISP can link an IP to a subscriber, and only discloses that under legal process.

Is my IP address private information?

It is visible to every site you visit, so it isn't secret, but it's still sensible not to post it publicly. This page lets you hide it for screenshots.

How do I change my IP address?

Restart your router or mobile data connection to get a new dynamic address (not guaranteed), or use a VPN, which replaces your visible IP with the VPN server's.

Why do I have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses?

Dual-stack connections support both protocols. Your browser picks one per website, usually preferring IPv6 when it works.
